"I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death.” - Professor Dumbledore

Section A: Areas of the United Kingdom
Subsection (1)
Section B: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry

Subsection (1) Houses. Hogwarts has four houses that you might be sorted into. Our houses are named after the four founding wizards and witches of the institution over a thousand years ago. Each house symbolizes the strongest traits of each founder, though these traits do not wholly define any one witch or wizard sorted into the house.

Gryffindor House

"You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart"
--The Sorting Hat

Gryffindor is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Godric Gryffindor. Its emblematic animal is the lion, and its colors are red and gold. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as "Nearly Headless Nick" is the house ghost. The particular characteristics of students Sorted into Gryffindor are courage, chivalry and determination. Gryffindor corresponds roughly to the element of fire, and it is for that reason that the colors red and gold were chosen to represent the House. The Gryffindor house emphasises the traits of courage as well as "daring, nerve, and chivalry," and thus its members are generally regarded as brave, though sometimes to the point of recklessness. They can also be short-tempered. According to Phinaes Nigellus Black, members of other houses, particularly Slytherin, sometimes feel that Gryffindors engage in "pointless heroics." Another Slytherin, Severus Snape, considered many Gryffindors to be self-righteous and arrogant, with no regard for rules.

Hufflepuff House

"You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil"
--The Sorting Hat

Hufflepuff is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its founder was the medieval witch Helga Hufflepuff. The Fat Friar is the House's patron ghost. Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. Its emblematic animal is the badger, and yellow and black are its colors. Hufflepuff corresponds roughly to the element of earth, and it is for that reason that the House colors were chosen: yellow represented wheat, while black was emblematic of soil. The Hufflepuff points hourglass contains yellow diamonds Students belonging to this house are known to be hard-working, friendly, loyal, honest and rather impartial. It may be that due to their values, Hufflepuffs are not as competitive as the other houses, or are more modest about their accomplishments. Hufflepuff appears to have the least rivalry with the other houses except during increased competition such as in Quidditch or tournaments.

Ravenclaw House

"Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind."
--The Sorting Hat

Ravenclaw is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Rowena Ravenclaw. Members of this house are characterized by their wit, learning, and wisdom. Its house colors are blue and bronze, and its symbol is the eagle. The house ghost, who in life was the daughter of the house's founder Rowena Ravenclaw, is the Grey Lady. Many great wizards and witches have come from this house, including Filius Flitwick, Garrick Ollivander and Luna Lovegood. Ravenclaw roughly corresponds with the element of air; the House colors blue and bronze were chosen to represent the sky and eagle feathers respectively, both having much to do with air. Ravenclaw House prizes learning, wisdom, wit, and intellect in its members. Thus, many Ravenclaws tend to be academically motivated and talented students. Students in Ravenclaw can also be quirky and possess unusual intellectual interests. Ravenclaws generally accept and celebrate these eccentrics.

Slytherin House

"Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends."
--The Sorting Hat

Slytherin is one of the four Houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and is traditionally home to students who exhibit such traits as cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition. Its emblematic animal is the snake and its colors are green and silver. The house ghost is the Bloody Baron. Founded by Salazar Slytherin, the house is composed mostly of pure-blood students, due to its founder's mistrust of Muggle-born witches and wizards. Slytherin house has a negative reputation, with many claiming that it is the source of most Dark Wizards in Britain, notably Tom Marvolo Riddle, who later became Lord Voldemort, as well as a large majority of his Death Eaters. It has a traditional rivalry with Gryffindor. Slytherin corresponds roughly with the element of water with serpents being commonly associated with the sea and lochs in western European mythology as well as serpents being physically fluid and flexible animals. The colors also correspond with waters around lakes and lochs often being green, and silver being often associated with grey rain water. Slytherins tend to be ambitious, shrewd, cunning, strong leaders, and achievement-oriented. They also have highly developed senses of self-preservation. This means that Slytherins tend to hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done. According to Albus Dumbledore, the qualities which Salazar valued in the students he chose included cleverness, resourcefulness, determination, and "a certain disregard for the rules." The Sorting Hat claims that blood purity is a factor in selecting Slytherins. This suggests that it bases its decisions more upon the views of its members than on any accurate test of a student's lineage. Muggle-born Slytherins exist, but are very rare. There have also been definite examples of half-bloods sorted into the house, including Tom Marvolo Riddle and Severus Snape. Also, pure-bloods are not automatically placed in Slytherin. There have been various examples of pure-bloods sorted into other houses, including the Weasley family, Sirius Black, Neville Longbottom, and James Potter I all being sorted into Gryffindor house, Ernie Macmillan being sorted into Hufflepuff, and Morag MacDougal and Stephen Cornfoot being sorted into Ravenclaw.

Subsection (2) House Points. House points at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry can be given or docked by the Heads of Houses, Professors, Healers, Head Students, or Prefects. Points can also be deducted for various reasons. All house points are verified by one of the governors before being added to the house point totals.

A. RP Challenges. RP Challenges are available within each house and during events and generally follow the following standards:

  • RP challenges are worth up to 50 points per RP.
  • Posts must be one paragraph with 5 sentences or more.
  • The first post is worth 10 points.
  • Subsequent posts are worth 5 points per post to a max of 50 points at 9 posts.

B. House Cup. Each House starts the term with zero points and competes for the House Cup by earning House Points. At the end of the term, the House Cup is awarded to the House that has accumulated the most points.

C. Discipline. Hogwarts has exemplary standards for behavior and high expectations of students to work devotedly, determinedly, and diligently. We believe in positive behavior reinforcement, though discipline is occasionally a consequence for misbehavior.

Subsection (3) Faculty and Staff of Hogwarts School.

A. Prefects. Each house has up to, but no more than, four prefects. Gender does not play a role in being appointed to the position. These prefects are charged with the duty of watching over the students in their house and making sure they stay out of trouble, but they must also be ready to deduct points from those that misbehave (though they also may and should award points for good behavior). They work directly with Head Students and report to their peers in the chain of command. Prefects are chosen by their head of house and deputy head of house.

Prefect Requirements:

  • Students are generally chosen at 2nd year or above, but may be 1st years if deemed fit.
  • Must be exemplary in activity (online AND posting at least 3 times a week!).
  • Must demonstrate respect, responsibility, and readiness.
  • Must demonstrate the characteristics and qualities of their house.
  • Must be passing any classes currently enrolled in.

Prefect Responsibilities:

  • Prefects are members of the Junior Wizengamot and will work together with the Head of the JW to plan and execute school-wide events. They will use the JW to communicate household concerns and create a venue of unity among the houses.
  • Prefects may award or deduct up to 15 points at their discretion. They will be expected to submit a report to the HOH of the student they are awarding or deducting points from.
  • Prefects are allowed the autonomy of assigning detention, but must submit a report regarding the incident to both the HOH of the student and the Headmaster.
  • Prefects may escort students to higher authority at any time, for any reason.
  • Prefects do not have a curfew and are entrusted with the responsibility of investigating student concerns with diligence. Prefects should consult their head student for any situation that they are unsure of for assistance.
  • Prefects are expected to work with their Head and Deputy Head of House to plan events, and facilitate their pride month festivals.

B. Head Students. There are no more than 2 Head Students that represent all houses at Hogwarts. Head Students are nominated by Heads of House and voted upon by the Head of the Junior Wizengamot and the Headmistress/Deputy of Hogwarts.

Head Student Requirements:

  • Students are generally chosen at 2nd year or above, but may be 1st years if deemed fit.
  • Must be exemplary in activity (online AND posting at least 3 times a week!).
  • Must demonstrate respect, responsibility, and readiness.
  • Must demonstrate the characteristics and qualities of their house.
  • Must be passing any classes currently enrolled in.
  • May be replaced during the term if they are failing to meet head student standards.

Head Student Responsibilities:

  • Head Students may award or deduct up to 25 points at their discretion. They will be expected to submit a report to the HOH of the student they are awarding or deducting points from.
  • Head Students are allowed the autonomy of assigning detention, but must submit a report regarding the incident to both the HOH of the student and the Headmaster.
  • Head Students may escort students to higher authority at any time, for any reason.
  • Head Students do not have a curfew and are entrusted with the responsibility of investigating student concerns with diligence. Prefects should consult their head student for any situation that they are unsure of for assistance.
  • Head Students are expected to work with their Head and Deputy Head of House to plan events, and facilitate their pride month festivals.
  • Head Students are expected to monitor the floor on which their dormitories are on.
  • Head Students are expected to work with their Head and Deputy Head of House to plan events, and facilitate their pride month festivals.

C. Staff. Hogwarts employs a number of staff that are not professors. These individuals are valued members of our community and as such are allowed the following authority over students:

  • Staff are given autonomy to award or deduct up to 25 points per infraction. HOH or DHOH must be notified of any infractions.
  • Staff may escort students to a higher authority figure at a time, for any reason.
  • Staff may assign detention, however they must submit notification to the HOH or DHOH of the infraction.
  • Staff are enabled to oversee detention.

D. Professors. Professors are additional staff that are trusted and respected members of the Hogwarts community. Their authority is extended to the following:

  • Professors may award or deduct up to 50 points per infraction or award. Deductions or merits over this must be approved by the Hogwarts administration.
  • Professors may assign and oversee detention. They are allowed to oversee their own detentions. A report to the HOH or DHOH must be made.
  • Professors may prohibit access to students from areas of the castle for necessary reasons.
  • Professors may escort students to a higher authority figure at any time, for any reason.
  • Professors may recommend students for suspension or expulsion to the Headmaster, though they may not suspend or expel students without approval.

E. Heads of Houses. The Hogwarts Heads of House have autonomy to run their house as they see fit. They are responsible for their students and their experience while they are at Hogwarts. Their authority is extended to the following:

  • HOHs are allowed to deduct or award up to 100 points per infraction as they deem appropriate.
  • HOHs are allowed to assign and administer detention as they see fit.
  • HOHs may suspend any student from academy activities and areas of the castle (anything other than class) as they deem appropriate.
  • HOHs are allowed to suspend both students and student leadership from their duties and activities outside of courses.
  • HOHs may recommend students for expulsion but submitting a written letter to the Headmaster
  • HOHs are responsible for selecting 4 worthy prefects at the start of each term and submit their selections to the Head of the Junior Wizengamot.
  • HOHs are responsible for nominating at least one student from their own house to be a head student for the school. They must send their nomination with their prefect list to the Head of the Junior Wizengamot for the start of each term.
  • HOHs are responsible for overseeing prefect and head student (if applicable) activity. They may replace a prefect at any time during the term if the student is not meeting expectations. They may request that any head student be replaced due to failure to meet expectations by contacting the Headmaster of Hogwarts and the Head of the Junior Wizengamot (final decision will be in their hands).

F. Deputy Headmaster. At Hogwarts, the Deputy Headmaster/mistress works alongside the Headmaster/mistress to ensure school wide rules and regulations. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Awarding or deducting any number of points
  • Suspending any student or student leader. The DHM must alert the necessary HOH for coordinating suspension.
  • Suspending student leaders from their duties and responsibilities.
  • May request that a student be expelled by contacting the administrators of Hogwarts Online.
  • In the instance of adjudication, all matters of points, punishment or discrepancies are settled by the DHM or the HM. A student may appeal the DHM's decision by submitting a letter in writing to the Headmaster.
  • The DHM may recommend staff for disciplinary actions and escort them to the HM.

G. Headmaster. The Hogwarts Headmaster has autonomy over every aspect of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as of course over the United Kingdom.

-The HM may award or deduct any amount of points.
-The HM may suspend or permanently remove any member of the Student Leadership from their duties.
-The HM may suspend or expel students.
-The HM may suspend or remove staff or professors from the institution.
-The HM is the final word in adjudicating all issues.
-All harassment reports must be brought to the Headmaster. It is her job to handle this discreetly and without prejudice.

Subsection (4) Academics.

A. Classes. Classes at Hogwarts are offered within each major department and have varying enrollment specifications. These requirements may depend on year or require a quill in an earlier level of the course. Courses are offered in a variety of standard and extra-curricular formats. No specific classes are required for year advancement.

  • Students must earn a passing quill in at least three classes in order to move up a year. Quills are cumulative at Hogwarts, so as long as you have obtained your minimum three for that term, you may advance to the next year.
  • Students in their 5th year must obtain three passing OWLs to move up to sixth year.
  • Students must obtain at least three quills per term of attendance (minus their testing terms), three OWLs, and three NEWTs to graduate and become an Official Alumnus/Alumna.

B. Testing at Hogwarts.

I. Ordinary Wizarding Levels. An Ordinary Wizarding Level (often abbreviated O.W.L.) is a subject-specific test taken during Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry students' fifth year, administrated by the Wizarding Examinations Authority. The score made by a student on a particular O.W.L. determines whether or not he or she will be allowed to continue taking that subject in subsequent school years. As well as referring to the test that students take in their fifth year, the term "O.W.L" also refers to the type of class, i.e. the level of difficulty of the class the student is taking. In addition, "achieving an O.W.L" is used to refer to a class in which the student has passed their O.W.L exam (example: Harry Potter received an O.W.L. in Transfiguration by attaining a passing grade on the O.W.L exam for that class). Students must receive a passing score for at least three OWLs in order to move up to sixth year.

II. Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests. A Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test (often abbreviated N.E.W.T.) is a subject-specific exam that seventh year wizards and witches at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry take to help them pursue certain careers after their graduation. For instance, the Ministry of Magic only accepts Auror applicants with at least five N.E.W.T.s with top grades of either 'Exceeds Expectations' or 'Outstanding'. In order to become an Official Alumni of HOS, students must obtain at least 3 passing NEWTs. NEWTs are not required for all careers. B. Grading System The Hogwarts grading system is as follows: O - Outstanding (Pass, always continue to N.E.W.T.) E - Exceeds Expectations (Pass, usually continues to N.E.W.T.) A - Acceptable (Pass, rarely continue to N.E.W.T) P - Poor (Fail, may repeat subject) D - Dreadful (Fail, may not receive O.W.L. credit) T - Troll (Fail, with distinction. More than one T may mean refusal into other N.E.W.T.s)

C. Awards. At the end of each term, awards are given out to deserving students and Hogwarts staff members for their dedication and hard work throughout the past term.

D. Graduating and Alumni. Alumni are recognized at Hogwarts as members who have invested their time and energy into their characters, passing these monumental steps. Their play-bys are reserved and off limits, and the character no longer counts towards the players 5-character per setting limit. Alumni are allowed to remain a part of the school and participate in their alma mater’s functions.

To qualify as Alumni in the UK, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Earned at least 3 quills per term of attendance, minus the two testing terms (Those who started as a first-year should have 15 quills; canons who started in a higher year might have less.)
  • Passed your OWL & NEWT examinations
  • Contact the Mirror Mirror to be added to the alumni wall

Students who meet the quill requirements to graduate but do not complete the testing will not be considered alumni. Special cases will be made for transfer students who do not have the opportunity to take equivalent testing.

E. Foreign Exchange Program. The Hogwarts Foreign Exchange Program allows students who are regularly enrolled at Hogwarts to spend one term abroad at either Beauxbatons or Durmstrang. Each student who is accepted into the program will live, eat, drink, sleep, and take classes directly at the host school lasting one full term of study.

● Students must be third-year or higher to be considered for the program.
● Students who are accepted into the program can spend no more than two terms abroad (one at Hogwarts, one at Durmstrang).
● At this time, students are not allowed to return to the same school more than once to study abroad. If you wish to go back to the same school for a second term, you should consider a full transfer.
