For the week of September 28th, 2009

This week winner was none other than Slytherin’s very own Ginger Wadsworth. One of the key organizers of this years Slythoween events, Prefect and well-known Puff hater. Rather than risk an interview, I sent her an owl with a few questions that I hope readers would like to know.

My name is Ginger Wadsworth
I am in Slytherin house
I am 13 years old
An interesting fact about me is I’m an artist
My favorite subject at Hogwarts is Potions, Transfiguration and Dark Creatures. I can’t pick just one.
My worst subject at Hogwarts is Household Charms
Outside of class, my favorite pass time is drawing and “mentoring” younger students.
Three words I would use to describe myself are Pretty, Pretty, Pretty
Three words my friends would use to describe me are Mental, Evil, Pretty
When I was announced WOTW, I felt Fine

So there you have it. Who will be next weeks WOTW? Vote now!

Favorite Class For the Week

Posted by Rachel  Published in October 8, 2009

I am saddened to report that there were few nominations sent in last week for the “class of the week” title. Be sure to send in more this week, and, if your class is chosen, you will receive no less than 50 house points! Out of the few nominations I did receive, I am proud to announce that Professor Sorcha MacSween received the most nominations for her wand making classes.
In order to prepare myself for the exciting interview, I went out and spoke to the very people that nominated her, and a few more of her students!

Astonishingly, the only criticism any student had for Professor MacSween was that she is “a bit too perky”. But honestly, readers, do you want your teachers to be old and boring who couldn’t care less about what they were teaching?! I think not! Other comments ranged from “alright enough” to “nice and caring”, “awesome” and she knows “her stuff” and “how to run a classroom”.

And as for the subject? Amazingly, there were only a couple of students who had taken the subject for an “easy quill” and actually “couldn’t care less” about it. Another student admitted that they went from viewing it as “a joke class” to the Professor actually making them “interested in the subject”. One student also reported that they’d taken the subject “to know if [their] neighbour did kill [their] parents”. Prof MacSween clearly has a wide variety of students to teach this term!

It became clear to me that the Professor has a very good teaching style, with one student explaining being in her classrooms as “enter[ing] a realm [where] learning is the new fun” and another describing the coursework as “easy”.

So, after the excitement of learning from her pupils what she, and her classes, were like, I was very eager to learn from our very own, wonderful, Professor MacSween. From the very moment I stepped foot into her office, her love for her subject was made clear. Far from being one of the Professors who leaves her interest in her classroom, her love for wands has spilled over into all aspects of her life. Indeed, her office looks exactly like that of Ollivander’s shop, and she was to be found fiddling with a wand even when I walked in.

Rachel Miller: Professor, I would like to award you with 10 galleons on behalf of the HO Pensieve. I would also like to let you know that your two classes have been awarded the title of “classes of the week”.
Professor MacSween: Wow, classes of the week you say? Well thats something. What an honor, thank you!
RM: So, I can tell you’re suprised! Did you really not think you were in with a chance of winning? Why or why not?
SM: Of course I am surprised. I had no idea I would “win” something like that. To be honest, I did not even realize there was an award like that to be won! But I suppose it is more of a surprise because not many people want to learn about wands anymore, it seems. So I’m very happy when I see students with enthusiasm about what I teach!
RM: Indeed, you are actually the first winner of this award! So, your pupils have chosen your classes to have the title “classes of the week”. What student would you choose to be “student of the week”?
SM: Well, that is a very tricky question. To ask a professor to name only one student who has excelled is like asking a dairy farmer to find the cow with the best milk. I suppose if I had to choose only one student who exemplified the most just this past week, based on my classes alone, I would say Izzy Beckett. She was very active in my class and participated throughout the entirety of lessons, so that is a big thing for me. I love when students participate, it shows me that they are listening to what comes out of my mouth.
RM: So, why do you think you have received this award? What do you think is the best aspect of your classes?
SM: To be honest, I am not sure why I got this award. I do not compare myself to other professors- we all have our own styles of teaching. Maybe it just happened that this particular week, I did or said something that sparked some interest? I hope so, at least. I think the best aspect of my classes is that they are so laid back. The material is not only interesting but also easy to grasp. I try to teach on a level that all of the students will understand, so you can come into the room with no knowledge what-so-ever of wands and walk out a miniature expert!
RM: And, finally, what exciting things lie in store for your pupils over the remainder of this term?
SM: Later in the term my basic wand making students will be constructing a model wand to see the structure of them. This will demonstrate their overall understanding and give them something to walk away proud of. My advanced students will be attempting to construct a real, yet basic, working wand. Something with a common and easy to manage wood type, core, etc.

So, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen, from Professor MacSween herself! Who would you like to hear from next week? Be sure to let me know!

Thank you to Aiden Lynch, Louis Weasley, Aubrey Ryan, Mikayla Beleev and Anabelle Leigh for the statements.
