For the week of October 19th, 2009

He’s been called “son of ferret boy” by some, “babe magnet” by others, but for this week, he’s known to everyone as Writer of the Week! I’m talking about the one and only Scorpius Malfoy. And here’s his answers - I know you’re all keen to learn more about the Malfoy boy.

My name is Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy, but my friends call me Scorpy.
I am in Slytherin house Duh..could you picture me in Gryff or Puff? HA!
I am 13 years old
An interesting fact about me is I don’t like dust, dirt or turnips
My favorite subject at Hogwarts is Dark Creatures (Viv, you are hot)
My worst subject at Hogwarts is Herbology. Who would have thought that the Corpse plant would be so hard to take care of?
Outside of class, my favorite pastime is “Meeting” new people, removing dust and lint from my clothing and hanging out with Lulu Munster
Three words I would use to describe myself are Amazing, Hot, Not OCD-ish.
Three words my friends would use to describe me are Awesome, Evil, Hot
When I was announced WOTW, I felt great. Of course I should win..I am a Malfoy after all. Potter I hope you are reading this.

So there you go! Who would you like to be Writer of the Week next week? Go vote now!

Today In History

By Lyra Elani
On October 24,1981, the Fidelius Charm was cast to hide Lily and James Potter from Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Dumbledore offered to be secret keeper, but James and Lily refused, planning to go with Sirius Black instead, then switched to Peter Pettigrew at the last minute. It is also said that the fidelius charm was cast barely a week before Voldemort went after the Potters.

By: Seymore Whydontcha

Upon entering my sitting room, I notice my crystal ball filled with smoke. This surprises me, as I did not expect this occurrence so soon. Nevertheless, I sit down and gaze into the crystal ball, to see what it has to show me. Please remember, I am not responsible for any effects that may result in the reading of these predictions. Take a seat and open your minds, as I share with you the mysteries that lie ahead.

* * * *

The fog clears showing the Slytherin common room, and a group of older students advising younger ones. One female Slytherin stands out, clearly the leader of the older Slyths, discussing the rules of the master and slave program she initiated. A younger male, feeling superior, demands to skip being a slave and move directly to ‘master’ status. The boy is immediately assigned to be the ’slave’ of the female leader and is given jobs normally considered worthy only for puffs. The young boy is also given clothes to wash, shoes to shine, and ordered to clean all animal cages with his toothbrush. It doesn’t take him long to realize he made a huge mistake by thinking he was at the same level of command as the older students. He is also instructed to ‘test’ the potions that were made, to ensure they were brewed correctly. As you can imagine, the boy discovers, too late, that this is also part of his punishment. One potion was a swelling potion, which caused parts of his body to swell outrageously. The other was supposed to be a deflating draught, but it was incorrectly brewed, or perhaps it was something completely different. The crystal ball shows the boy walking through the castle heading to the hospital wing, which could be construed as normal, until one notices his ridiculus appearance. His head, hands and behind, are swollen four times their normal size, and his ears have oddly taken on the shape and size of a bats. Alas, fog begins to fill the crystal ball at this point, preparing a change of scenes.

* * * *

When the fog in the crystal ball clears, I see two girls, a claw and a puff, arguing over a boy. The two girls are friends, well at least they are friends at the moment. The argument began when the puff girl voiced her interest in the boy, as being more than a friend. The claw girl knows this, and has not done anything to encourage the boy. However, the boy seemingly has no idea of the puff girls interest in him, and so he treats both girls as friends. He does spend more time with the claw girl, rather than the puff girl, but the time they spend together are purely as friends. It appears the puff girl needs to come to terms that boys and girls CAN be just friends, and if she cannot accept this, she will find herself alone for most, if not all of her life. If there are any puff/claw girls who are experiencing something similar to this, remember that there is such a thing as boys and girls simply being friends, and get over your way of thinking that you are the only girl any boy could spend time with.

* * * *

My crystal ball fills with fog then slowly clears away, showing another group of Hogwarts inhabitants. This time, oddly, I am being shown Gryffindor Professors. There are some professors being hit with pies in the face, and some dropping into a tank filled with jello. topped with whipped cream. The Gryffindor students, as you can well imagine, are having quite a good time being part of these events, except of course, for the Prefects and Head Girl. These students are also wearing pie and being dropped into the jello/whipped cream tanks. The Professors, Prefects and Head Girl are also in a competion regarding leaves, and the crystal ball shows one professor and one prefect covered in pie, jello/whipped cream and covered in leaves. All Gryffindor Professors, Prefects and the Head Girl, be on the lookout for any events with these activities, and know that at some point during these events, you will be covered in these things.

Minister Travers Speaks About Recent Changes in the Ministry

By Lyra Elani

I’ve recently had the honor of having a nice chat with Minister Travers regarding the recent changes in the Ministry. As many of you know, the Ministry is now located much closer to Hogwarts than it was before. This change was brought about after several attacks on witches and wizards, as Minister Travers explains. All in all, both the students of Hogwarts, and the citizens of Hogsmeade should feel safe in knowing the Ministry is located so closely.
He invited me into his office, and was very polite and willing to answer questions in order to inform us all about the changes, how they came about, and what they will mean to the Wizarding World as a whole. The first question I asked him was;

“What motivated the appointment of a new Minister of Magic?”
There was a need for changes in the way things were run, mostly because of the interest of having a bit of new blood. The repeated attacks on our kind in the past necessitated a need for a leader who was used to violence and the ways to a peaceful solution, thus causing those in need to think of my name. I am indeed still humbled and grateful I was chosen.

As you can see, Minister Travers does not mince words, or try to sugar-coat the reasons for the current change in leadership. We do need a strong leader as Minister of Magic, and Minister Travers does appear to be the one more suited to the position. These past accomplishments speak for themselves, as well as adding to his list of qualifications required to become Minister.

What did you do prior to your appointment as Minister?
Prior to being Minister, I had various duties, amongst them, I was Head Auror at the Ministry, while I ran the Magical Law Enforcement Department. Before that, I was a professor here at Hogwarts, and even was Head of House of Ravenclaw. That was something I particularly enjoyed, and I still look on that time with great fondness, as do I think of my Claws with gratitude and pride.

Minister Travers has an impressive portfiolio documenting his previous jols/titles. Being a Head Auror at the Ministry, and running the Magical Law In Enforcement, along with his being a professor and Head of House, you can well imagine his qualifications are substantial. In my own opionion, Minister Travers is much like former Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt had been. The answer he gave to the next question I asked, strengthened my belief that he is the one destined to remain Minister.

How you were chosen for this position?
I am not really sure. Perhaps it was my track record that caught the attention of those in need, or perhaps it was my reputation, I’m unsure. Either way, I know I am extremely proud to be the one they chose for the position, and I don’t intend to let anyone down… nor be someone who can be pushed on to give into demands.

We all know that a promotion of this magnitude could and would make someone think they’re better than everyone else, which could also have them more concerned with themselves, rather than the whole of the wizarding world.

How were you notified?
By owl. I was eating breakfast with my children when it dumped the letter in my cereal. Luckily, oatmeal doesn’t tend to be terribly liquid, so I was able to read the letter easily enough.

The interview required me to ask how Minister Travers was notified of his appointment, and as his answer above indicates, he is a dedicated family man. I moved on to the next question on my list just then.

Were you and your family excited by the news?
Terribly so. You see, it’s always been a dream of mine to do good works, and to help out the Wizarding world, and luckily, I’ve spent most of my life doing just that. It brought a fruition to my goal, and for that, I’m grateful for my training, and for the chance to make a difference.

Minister Travers, it seems, has had a long term dream of doing good to help the Wizarding World. This promotion to Minister is now giving him the chance to fulfill his dreams.

Do you think being Minister of Magic will affect your private and family life?
Unfortunately, yes. I am too widely known now than to just go about my business, and I have a bodyguard now supplied by the Ministry whenever I leave the comforts of my own home. And that also extends to my children, since with my escalation in profile, they are in danger of kidnapping by those who think I can be coerced into giving them what they want. Unfortunately, I have been told I’m too tender-hearted and can see myself being treated thusly. So yes, I think it will affect my private and family life… but all the same, not only for the worse. My friends have all been pleased and I’ve been able to give work to those who need it… all in all, I cannot complain.

What is your stand on the current condition of the Ministry and it’s employees?
Right now, it’s in a state of turmoil. Why? Because everything is in upheaval. But once everyone’s used to doing that which they were assigned, it will even out. I’m not worried and neither should be those who read your publication.

Has there been other new additions to the staff?
Yes. I have changed up a few of the higher positions out for those I know can do a great job, not that those who were doing that weren’t doing well, but I’ve always believed that new blood can often spice up things. You’ll see, in time, that it will be better than ever before.

Can we expect major changes in the Ministry in the near future?
No, nothing too major. Just the signs of settling, that’s all. Like any new group, we’re going to have to stretch a bit and see how things fit, what with our alliances and various dealings we do day to day, being used to the old Minister. Already there have been some grumblings amongst some of our older groups, but it will settle.

As the newly appointed Minister of Magic, is there anything you hope to improve in any area of the Ministry? If so, what would that be?
Yes. I want to have more of a bridge between Hogwarts and the Ministry. Since most students, when they leave Hogwarts, come to work at the Ministry, we want to make it more… friendly, a place they could easily see themselves working at and for. Perhaps in time we’ll institute a plan for more than a few interns, but since things are still fresh here for myself and most Ministry workers, we will see how it goes.

When our interview was at an end, I felt extremely pleased with the answers recieved. You can see that Minister Travers is doing all he can to make the Ministry better, for all of the Wizarding world.

Let’s Ask Lyra

Posted by Lyra Elani  Published in October 28 2009
user posted image

Dear Lyra,
Just recently I learned that my parents have died. I don’t know even if it’s true though, it’s something that I can’t comprehend. I was never extremely close to them, but now I never can be. What can I do? I can’t imagine how to handle this. Already I’ve found I can’t, things don’t seem to matter anymore, I haven’t eaten in two days except for a cookie and the idea of eating just makes me feel sick. Nothing matters. This is a world that I’ve never experienced nor do I care to experience it any further.

- Alone in the World

Alone in the World,
The passing of a loved one is naturally hard to comprehend and accept. I would think being here at school at the time of their passing would make it that much harder to accept.You may not have been close to them, but you did always know they were there, and thought, as many of us do, that you would have more time to spend with them. This may be hard to believe right now, but you’re stronger than you think. Talk to someone you’re close to, not a big group of people, as that might be a bit much at first. No one can change the feelings you’re experiencing, that is part of the grieving process. A close friend can simply be there for you when you need a shoulder to cry on and help you see that you have something to live for.

Lyra

Dear Lyra,
I haven’t spoken to my boyfriend in like a month, and now i’ve met someone who is incredibly fun and who i really like. Would i be a bad person to owl my boyfriend and tell him I think we should be friends? I don’t want to hurt him, but i really like this other boy.

From,
Worst Girlfriend Ever

Worst Girlfriend Ever,
First of all, it takes two people to make a relationship work. You can’t take all the blame for not having spoken to him in a month, however, I don’t think sending an owl to him is a way to break up. You would continue to feel it’s your fault if you did it that way, which could affect your chances with the new guy. You should talk to him in person and let him know how you feel. He may be feeling the same way as you are, but is also unsure what to do. That’s something you won’t know until you talk to him. Good Luck!

Lyra
